1981 to 1983--(while a doctoral student) Editorial assistant under the direction of Dr. James M. Kauffman for the peer-reviewed journals, Exceptional Education Quarterly (now known as Remedial and Special Education), and Analysis and Intervention in Developmental Disabilities (now known as Research in Developmental Disabilities). Responsibilities included proofreading and copy editing of manuscripts submitted for publication, day-to-day journal operations, and correspondence with contributing authors and reviewers.

1976 to 1979--(June to August) Therapeutic recreation coordinator, Henrico County, Virginia, Department of Recreation and Parks (supervised special education teachers of individuals with mild to severe intellectual disabilities; developed recreational activities for persons of all ages who were intellectually disabled)
