INTRODUCTION TO OUR LABORATORY

The research effort of our group is focused on the use of Organic Chemistry toward understanding the fundamental structural and polymer science of wood biopolymers. A major thrust of our effort is focused at developing novel chemicals and materials from a variety of renewable resources. To do this, the fundamental organic chemistry of oxidations as applied to carbohydrates, cellulose and lignin is closely examined. In addition, we are developing novel magnetic resonance and chromatographic techniques for probing the structural transformations induced on such polymers during processing. The detailed reactions occuring in Lignin and Cellulose as well as lignin-carbohydrate bonds and chromophore formation during biomass transformation processes are also examined. Other topics include:  Biomimetic catalysis in oxidations of aromatic substrates; Solvents for Green Chemistry,Ionic Liquids and Novel Wood Composites with Synthetic Polymers.
