Detailed syllabus and Homework Assignments
TOPICS: Systems of algebraic equations. Interpolation. Curve fitting. Numerical integration. Calculus of finite differences. Numerical optimization. Systems of differential equations.

TEXTBOOK: The lectures will follow John H. Matthews and Kurtis D. Fink, Numerical Methods Using MATLAB, third edition, Prentice Hall, 1999. Various typographical errors have been noted; please check these occasionally for updates.

HOMEWORK: You are supposed to read from your textbook the sections presented in class. Homework problem will be assigned each week and posted on this page (Homework). Please, return your solutions to the instructor by the due date by the end of class. Late homework will not be accepted. The problems will occasionally require a proof. The homework will be judged for correctness and clarity. When the problem requires a computed solution, it must be accompanied by a correct, well-documented computer program which will be judged for its understandability. You are encouraged to work additional problems from your textbook, although your homework grade will only be determined by the assigned problems.

COMPUTING: Students are encouraged to use MATLAB and the computers available in the Arts and Sciences Computing Center for both symbolic and numerical computations.

EXAMINATIONS: There will be one MIDTERM EXAM in class on Wednesday February 27.
The cumulative FINAL EXAM is in class on Thursday April 25, 10:30-12:30.

GRADING: You will be allowed to drop your worst homework score. The homework will count 35% towards the final grade. The midterm exam will count 30% and the final exam will count 35% towards the final grade. The final grade will be assigned according to the following scheme:

A: 88-100, B: 75-87, C: 62-74, D: 49-61, F: 0-48.

For those taking the course Pass/Fail, Pass will be equivalent to a grade D or better.

OFFICE HOURS: My office is in Cupples I, room 112 A. Office hours are Monday and Friday 2:00-3:00. If you want to reach me or schedule an appointment at a different time, please, talk to me at the end of the class or contact me by e-mail at: dlabate@math.wustl.edu
