Research

Recent and Ongoing Projects

Application of Genetic Algorithms to the Automotive Safety Industry:
Principle investigator: Dan Loughlin
Funding agency: Delphi Delco Electronics Corp.

Using distributed, hybrid genetic algorithms to calibrate automotive airbag releases.

Enhancements to the Strategy Development Tool to Support Regulatory Analyses:
Printciple investigators: Dan Loughlin, John Baugh, Downey Brill, Ranji Ranjithan
Funding agency: North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources
Continuing development of a decision support system for designing cost-effective air quality management strategies. Through this project, we hope to make the SDT ready to support the State of North Carolina in their efforts to comply with the Clean Air Act Ammendments. We are also applying mathematical optimization to model emissions trading programs to determine their benefits and cost-savings for NC. A technique called modeling to generate alternatives allows us to identify suboptimal trading outcomes, which may be helpful in predicting the range of air quality implications that may occur.

Advancement of Environmental Decision Support Systems Through HPCC:
Principle investigators: John Baugh, Downey Brill, Ranji Ranjithan
Funding agency: USEPS's High Performance Computing and Communications program
Investigation of how high performance computing can be combined with optimization and decision support systems to improve the design of environmental policy.

Development & Application of a Methodology for Characterizing & Managing Uncertainties in Emissions Inventories:
Principle investigators: Chris Frey and Dan Loughlin
Funding Agency: USEPA
In this project, we will: 1) investigate/develop approaches to quantify uncertainty in emissions inventories, 2) propagate these uncertainties through an air quality model, 3) use the techniques that are developed for a real world problem, and 4) characterize the apparent benefits of uncertainty analysis in decision making.

A Global Assessment of Recycling Policy and Markets:
Principle investigators: Mort Barlaz and Dan Loughlin
Funding Agency: Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF)
This project involves a characterization of recycling markets around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. We will explore the policies and other actions used by federal and local governments, as well as private corporations, to create and strengthen recycling markets. After examining the success of these approaches, we will provide policy recommendations for use in various regulatory climates.

Optimization of Wastewater Treatment Plants Using Genetic Algorithms:
Principle investigators: Dan Loughlin, Joel Ducoste, Francis de los Reyes; Also: Troy Doby
In this project, we are applying GAs to the design of WWTPs, allowing capital and operations and maintenance costs to be minimized while meeting effluent standards. This approach provides system-wide optimization, allowing design and operational parameters for primary, secondary, and tertiary processes to be optimized simultaneously.
