Read the Information for the Course

Mardi, 23 août

Première étape
Pages blanches: pp. 1-5 (A.1-4),
Pages bleues: pp. 11-17
Workbook (WB) pp. 1-5
Learn to use the audio on WebCT:
https://vistaserver.ncsu.edu/webct/entryPage.dowebct
You will need to sign in. Then listen to the audio and watch the video
for each lesson and for the exercises in the workbook.

Introduction to the alphabet and sounds:
http://phonetique.free.fr/alpha.htm
This page has audio of various pairs of sounds which you must
learn to distinguish.  As you're doing the sounds, remember the
letters used to write them.  French is pronounced as it's written,
no surprises, so once you learn the rules you can pronounce
any word perfectly.  You will have to have Macromedia Shockwave
installed to hear the sound.   Do all the exercises except Jeu: les couples,
which is stupid.

Jeudi, 25 août
Première Etape
Pages blanches: Finish 1ère étape pp. 5-10
Pages bleues: pp. 17-19
WB pp. 6-8

Here's some help for our Core Conversation.  They are videos on the situations
we're working on. Watch, listen, and imitate.  This site works best with Internet
Explorer
, and you must have Realplayer installed.
The first two are "Saying hello" and "Greeting friends."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/talk/greetings/
Also do "Saying your name" from this page:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/talk/introductions/
Listen to them and repeat as many times as you can, but the main thing is that
you do a little each day.  Then notice that each video has a little practice activity
farther down on the same page.

http://phonetique.free.fr/alpha.htm
Continue working on these sounds.  Keep in mind what letter combinations
produce them.  Do all the exercises except Jeu: les couples, which is stupid.

Salutations and farewells:
http://www.languageguide.org/txt/common/fr/
Note: for this site you need to have installed Quicktime or Windows
Media Player.  Quicktime is advised.  After you get the player installed,
go to the URL above, and at the bottom click on Preferences.  Then make
sure that all three of the boxes at the top are checked (Add sound to drop
down vocabulary lists, Enable sound, and Show Popups).  Then click Save
Preferences.  Now, when viewing any of the pages for this site, all you have
to do is hold your cursor over a word or phrase to hear the audio.  Slide it
back over the word as many times as you like to hear it again.  Repeat
and practice pronouncing all these as many times as you can. If you don't
get sound, be sure to tell me.  This practice is important.  When you have
vocabulary assigned from various pages of this site, go over each word several
times, pronouncing aloud, then replaying the audio, then copying the sound
again, to get more and more accurate.
