Quick note on how to use these two texts.  First read through all the French, then all the English. Then read one sentence in French, then its equivalent in English.  Get the idea, then go back to the French and really look at how the sentence in French says what it says, how it works.  Going back and forth like this will really teach you a lot.   Make a list of interesting equivalences, such as <un soldat du régiment> = <a soldier in the regiment>  and  <partir en guerre> =  <go off to war>.

Cyrano de Bergerac est une histoire d'amour...et d'amour propre.  C'est donc une comédie tragique. Cyrano, le héros de l'histoire, est un vaillant soldat du régiment des Cadets de Gascogne.  Il est brave, courageux, téméraire à l'extrême.  Il est bon, loyal, généreux, intelligent, spirituel, et sensible. C'est aussi un poète à l'âme tendre qui écrit de magnifiques vers.  Il a toutes les qualités d'un dieu, sauf une : il n'est pas beau.  En fait, il a un défaut plutôt énorme: son nez.  Cette infirmité le rend très susceptible auprès des hommes et très timide auprès des femmes.  Personne en sa présence ne peut mentionner le mot "nez".  Cyrano est secrètement amoureux de Roxane, mais Roxane est attirée par la beauté physique d'un autre homme, Christian.  Elle finit par aimer Christian à cause de sa poésie, mais cette poésie n'est pas la sienne : c'est celle de Cyrano.  Doutant de la capacité de Roxane d'aimer un homme laid, Cyrano se sert de Christian pour déclarer son amour, et elle tombe amoureuse de Christian.

Les deux hommes partent en guerre, et Roxane demande à Cyrano qu'il protège Christian.  Roxane admet à Christian finalement qu'elle l'aime pour son âme et sa poésie et qu'elle l'aimerait même s'il n'était pas beau.  Déconcerté par cet aveu, Christian part en bataille et il est tué.  Roxane part pour un couvent. Cyrano, pourtant, garde son secret jusqu'à la mort.  Il est blessé dans une embuscade.  Roxane va à son côté et découvre que c'est lui l'auteur de toutes ces lettres d'amour qu'elle recevait de Christian. Elle comprend que c'est lui qu'elle aime depuis tout ce temps.  Cyrano meurt dans ses bras, finalement aimé par celle qu'il avait aimée toute sa vie.

Translation:

Cyrano de Bergerac is a story of love and pride.  So it's a tragicomedy.  Cyrano, the story's hero, is a valiant soldier in the regiment called the Cadets of Gascony.  He's brave, courageous, and extremely reckless.  He's good, loyal, generous, intelligent, witty, and sensitive.  He's also a poet with a tender soul who writes wonderful verse.  He has all the qualities of a god, except one:  he isn't good-looking.  In fact, he has one defect which is rather sizeable: his nose.  This flaw makes him very touchy around men and very shy around women.  Noone can mention the word 'nose' in his presence.  Cyrano is secretly in love with Roxanne, but she is drawn by another man's physical beauty, Christian.  She winds up loving Christian because of his poetry, but it isn't his: it's Cyrano's.  Since Cyrano doubts Roxanne's ability to love an ugly man, he uses Christian as the mouthpiece of his love, and Roxanne falls in love with Christian.

The two men go off to war, and Roxanne asks  Cyrano to take care of Christian.  Finally she admits to Christian that she loves him for his soul and his poetry and would love him even if he weren't handsome.  Troubled by this confession, Christian goes into battle and is killed.  Roxanne leaves for a convent.  Cyrano, however, carries his secret almost to the grave.  He's wounded in an ambush. Roxanne rushes to his side and discovers that he is the author of all the love letters that she was receiving from Christian.  She realizes that it's he whom she has loved all this time.  Cyrano dies in her arms, finally loved by the one whom he had loved his whole life.
