RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

  • 2006-present
    • North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. Postdoctoral research associate, Department of Genetics. Responsible for quantitative trait locus mapping of complex traits in Drosophila melanogaster, including aggressive behavior and female reproductive behavior. Dr. Trudy F. C. Mackay, P.I.
    1999-2006
    • North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. Research assistant, Department of Zoology. Investigating a molecular marker-assisted approach to selective breeding in striped bass. Responsible for high-throughput microsatellite genotyping for parentage assignment, molecular cloning, fish husbandry and progeny testing. Dr. Craig Sullivan, P.I.
  • 1998-1999
    • Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA.
Research associate, Ecological Genetics Laboratory. Conducted molecular genetics research in American shad populations using PCR amplification of microsatellite DNA. Developed microsatellite DNA markers for endangered black-banded sunfish. Participated in field research for study of disease resistance in oysters. Instructed and supervised undergraduate students in genetic analysis of fish populations. Dr. Bonnie Brown, P.I.
  • 1995-1998
    • Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA
Graduate thesis research. Evaluated genetic variation in red-backed vole populations using microsatellite DNA. Sampled vole populations using standard trapping methods, prepared skulls and flat skins for museum collection, isolated DNA, optimized PCR conditions for microsatellite amplification, ran vertical polyacrylamide gels for genotyping, analyzed and reported data. Dr. John Pagels and Dr. Bonnie Brown, Advisors.
  • 1995
    • Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA
Graduate independent study. Evaluated methods and feasibility of population genetics study of the masked shrew, Sorex cinereus. Dr. John Pagels and Dr. Bonnie Brown, Advisors.
  • 1991-1994
    • Binney and Smith, Inc., Research and Development Division, Easton, PA. Associate chemist. Performed independent creative research to develop new products, formulated CrayolaTM inks and paints, carried out pre-market microbiology and performance tests. Richard Miller, Laboratory Manager.
  • 1990-1991
    • Advanced Fertility Institute, Bethlehem, PA
Laboratory technician. Involved in study of predicting pregnancy outcome from thyroid stimulating hormone levels in women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques. Dr. Mahendra DeSilva, Laboratory Supervisor.
  • 1987-1988
    • University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Wilmington, NC.
Undergraduate directed independent study. Gathered data and assisted in manuscript preparation for research into mammal distribution and abundance on North Carolina’s barrier islands. Dr. David Webster, Advisor.
