Welcome to FLE400!

Welcome to FLE400: American English Pronunciation. This course is offered in two formats: (1) face-to-face on campus, and (2) as a distance education course online. Check to see which format offerings are available each semester.

This course provides intensive pronunciation practice for non-native speakers of English who want to improve the clarity of their English speech. The primary focus of the course is improvement in the areas that are most important in making speech more understandable and native-like: word-stress and phrase-stress, intonation, and the rhythm of English speech. In addition, there will be work on vowel and consonant sounds throughout the semester. Strategies for practicing and improving your pronunciation outside of class will also be introduced.

Pronunciation practice will include individual work at home (with online video clips, narrated presentations, as well as the textbook and accompanying CD's). Online office hours will be conducted in the university synchronous learning management system, ElluminateLIVE! Students will have an opportunity to practice with theinstructor and other online students during office hours, and recorded homework assignments.

The course materials and activities will include lectures or online readings, videos, narrated presentations, quizzes, exams, and audio voice recordings.

This course is offered to international students, professionals, and ESL students who desire to identify individual areas of English pronunciation that could be improved. However, the course is also offered to any NCSU student who requires foreign language course credits as part of their degree program.
