Your presence is expected
This course explores current issues in the rapidly changing arena of social media and virtual communities (web 2.0 and 3D.) Developments in social media are altering relationships between individuals and organizations in dramatic ways that are important to you as job seekers, employees, recruiters, managers and innovators. The course starts with an overview of social networks and key online communities and explores the impact of social media technologies on business. Traditional and niche social network sites, blogging and microblogging, use of video and photo sharing sites, wikis, virtual worlds and bookmarking sites will be covered. Delving into the specifics of content creation, tracking, tagging, digging and “mashing-up” will also be a component of the course. Creativity practices will be applied in conjunction with content creation. We will hear from a range of social media practitioners to better understand the opportunities, issues and "how to's." There are many experimental facets of this course, including use of a blog as our primary communication means. Your ideas are always welcome as we make our way through the fast-moving target called social media. |

Getting started with Second Life:
Go to: www.secondlife.com
- NOTE: an alternative route to getting started in Second Life is through
NMC: http://sl.nmc.org/create.php which has much the same entry, but takes you to a less
crowded orientation location. Follow the instructions provided by NMC (new media consortium)
- Click on “get started” arrow
- Follow guidelines and fill in information. NOTE: Private information IS kept private by Linden Labs
- Create username and password
- Second Life has a list of last names for you to choose from. You MUST choose one of these
last names and find a first name/last name combination that is not the same as any other avatar.
This is so that every avatar in Second Life has a unique identity.
- Keep in mind that your Second Life user name is your login ID and your screen name.
A good idea is to use your own first name with last name initial. Example: ClaudiaK Kuhn
You can’t change it once registered. It will be seen by all you interact with in Second Life,
so keep it clean!
- Make sure to note your password down somewhere so you can find it. It can be time consuming
to find it again if you forget.
- Continue through the security check and create your account.
- Find auto-email from Second Life click on link to confirm your account.
- You will now have a choice of starting locations and can also follow instructions to download and
install Second Life program.
- You may also install program directly from www.secondlife.com (bottom left of page for download.)
If you are on a Nelson Hall or library computer that already has Second Life program installed,
then just open the Second Life viewer and enter your user ID and password to login.
- When you enter Second Life for the first time, you will be in an orientation area.
Expect that all the other avatars you see will also be “newbie” and will not know what to do.
Follow orientation guidelines to learn basics of Second Life movement and navigation.
- Follow this link to get to the College of Management Orientation Station.
