Teaching
I believe in students. I believe they can think, they can learn, and they can apply what they've learned in the career they choose. I believe that through my role as instructor and guide, I can help students with each of these abilities while at the same time creating a respectful, fun, and engaging classroom.
This teaching portfolio is a reflection of what I have accomplished in the classroom as well as what I hope to accomplish in the future. The first section, the teaching philosophy, is my explanation of the approach I take towards teaching and how I like to structure my classes to achieve the type of classroom as described above. This philosophy has developed over time, in part due to the training I've received from the Certificate of Accomplishment in Teaching program at North Carolina State University. Through this program, I have been able to explore other ways of approaching activities and classroom management and I truly believe my teaching has improved as a result. Therefore, I have included here reflections on workshops I have completed through the program, how I've applied what I learned in the classroom, and finally a reflection of my teaching overall and over time. Additionally, I have included course materials from the primary course I teach - ENG 331, Communication for Engineering and Technology. Finally, I've included a page with feedback and observations from students in my prior classes as well as my teaching advisor, Sarah Egan Warren.
It is my hope that this teaching portfolio will serve as an accurate, albeit condensed, version of my teaching as a whole. It has also served as a reflection and learning experience for me. Taking a step back and evaluating, describing, and critiquing one's own work is often an enlightening experience!
