Bulgari's U.S. Tour, May-June 1999

Using every possible rhythm, Bulgari played their tunes last night to a crowd of 200 in Madison (no earplugs necessary). Radostina's Thracian-style superexcellent voice and the mixed rhythms made folks sing and jive before the third set when chairs were pushed back for dancing. The Rhodope men's songs were my favorite.

I would like to add that the Ann Arbor show May 17 was also first-rate. The band was in top form, sounding better than last year. In this two-set show something between a third and half the material was new, meaning not on the CD sold last year. Even some of the old material had been rearrang- ed, which made for a nice break from familiar CD tracks. This is really Bulgarian folk music at its finest.

It's hard to imagine even Heifetz or Hendrix matching the speed and sensitivity of the composer and gadulka (fiddle) player Georgi Andreev's fingers, and the whole ensemble displayed a precision that left jaws agape throughout a well-filled Agate Hall.

We attended the Bulgari concert last night in Albuquerque, NM. This is a spectacular group of musicians! Don't miss them if they are coming anywhere near your area... Georgi Andreev on gadulka is outstanding in the selections they did here. I believe he also did the arrangements and orchestration.

If you are looking for a high quality "bitov" instrument (gaida, gadulka, tambura, kaval), they are selling some very fine ones. Their CD is also great although we hoped that "Take 11" (ala Take 5) would be on it.

I'm currently paying the morning-after price (who knew that knees could complain so loudly!) for attending Bulgari's Philadelphia workshop/performance. We learned the melody, harmony and lyrics to three songs in the afternoon, shared a potluck dinner, and danced, danced, danced... IMHO it doesn't matter how thin your experience with Bulgarian music and dance, you shouldn't miss these wonderful people.

I had the pleasure to sit in on one of the rehearsals for the upcoming Bulgari tour. If you have a chance to see (hear) them, do! They're great. Very musical, good sound, and very nice singing, both women's and men's.

I heartily encourage you to see BULGARI if they perform near you. They just played for a party here in Ocean Springs, and they were fantastic. Their selections and musicianship rivaled any of the commercial recordings I have collected. To experience them live was truly a wonderful experience. They were very accomodating to the dancers' requests, and very pleasant, polite guests.
