I grew up in Garden City, Michigan. I played seven years of youth hockey and youth baseball in the Detroit area. In the spring of 1978 my hockey team placed 8th in the state of Michigan for our age group.

Bill & Ted Branoff - Spring 1978

In March of 1978, my family moved to Zebulon, North Carolina. I was in 9th grade at the time. I was a little disappointed since there was no hockey in the Raleigh area, but I got a chance to play 4 years of high school baseball and 3 years of high school football. During my senior year we had 19 players on the football team. Our first string quarterback got hurt early in the season, and I was asked to move into that position. We did not pass too much because I couldn't see over the offensive line. Our wishbone-option offense team went to the first round of the NCHSAA state football playoffs losing to Southwest Onslow High School.
