Scene: A video store in Raleigh, N.C.
It's Halloween night, and Kim is working at a small video store called
Video Corner. It's around 8pm, and she gets off at 9. The store has
been very slow all night, and Kim is really bored. Her plans for the
evening are simple...she and two of her friends are going to watch a
horror movie at her house to celebrate Halloween. The phone rings. It's
Jennifer and Scott making sure that they're still on for the movie later
that night. They talk for a minute about what movie they're going to
get, and they decide to meet at the video store at 9.
Meanwhile, somewhere else in town, a girl driving down a long road sees
a hitchhiker with a Halloween mask on. She thinks she saw the guy at
the party she was at and she's sort of dingy, but since it's Halloween,
she doesn't think anything of it. So, she stops and picks up the
hitchhiker. She starts talking to him, but he never offers any
response. Finally, a news bulletin comes over the radio saying that a
lunatic has escaped from a mental hospital and is wearing a mask exactly
like the one the hitch hiker has on. The girl driving the car finally
gets wise to what's going on, but it's too late. The Killer grabs her
by the neck, and the car swerves to a halt. He finishes killing the
girl, kicks her out of the car, and drives away.
Back at the video store, it's almost 9. Jennifer and Scott come through
the door to find a sleepy Kim ready to get out of there. The clock hits
9, and Kim closes the store. She locks the front door, and they all
walk away and get into their cars. As they walk away, the Killer comes
into the scene. It's too late for him this time, so he decides he will
get Kim at her house later.
A few moments later the three arrive at Kim's house. She lives on a
country road, and the houses are quite spread out. They all make their
way into the living room of the house and sit down to watch the movie.
The movie starts and the phone rings. Kim gets up to answer it. It's
Kim's psychiatrist on the phone. He tells her that her father is the
man who has escaped from the mental institution. He also tells her that
her father has been talking about her a lot lately and there's a
possibility that h e may try to come back home. Kim tells him that she's
not alone, and she says that she'll get her friends to stay with her
that night. She goes back to the living room and tells her friends what
happened. They agree to stay with her, and they go back to watching the
movie. After a few minutes, the power goes out. Kim says that that
happens from time to time and everything will be okay if they just get
the generator going. So, they elect Scott to get the generator going.
The generator is located in Kim's shed which is behind her house.
Beyond the shed are woods, and the night is dark except for the
moonlight. Scott takes a flashlight on his journey to the generator.
Inside the shed, it's dark. The generator is on the immediate left.
Scott finds the light switch and turns it on. The Killer is directly
behind him when the light comes on. Scott doesn't see him and goes on
about his work. He plugs the generator in which is a very noisy piece
of machinery. He sticks his head out of the door and waves to Kim and
Jennifer who now turn to go back inside. As they're going inside, the
Killer makes his move. He grabs Scott from behind and chokes him to
death. Scott tries frantically to get away, but it's no use...he falls
to the floor dead. The killer now looks out of the door toward the
house. Jennifer and Kim are now back in the living room waiting for
Scott to return.
The Killer now decides to cut the power out again using a master switch
located in the shed. This time, the girls think Scott is playing a joke
on them, so Jennifer says she'll go handle Scott. So, she grabs a
flashlight and heads down to the shed. Kim stays behind in the living
room which is now only lit by a candle. Jennifer makes her way down to
the shed, and upon entering see's the killer wearing a mask that
belonged to Scott. She thinks it's Scott, but realizes it isn't when
Scott's dead body falls in front of her. She looks up to see The Killer
as he slashes her throat with a sickle.
By now, Kim figures the joke is over, and Jennifer and Scott are on
their way back to the house. So, when she hears the back door open, she
doesn't think anything of it. She has her back turned toward the living
room door, because she has decided to play a video game while she is
waiting for Jennifer and Scott to return. The Killer finally enters the
living room, and he begins walking toward Kim. She keeps saying
"Scott? Jennifer?" The Killer reaches out, and just as he is about to
put his hand on Kim's shoulder the scene cuts back to the Video Store
where Kim has been asleep the whole time. She is startled awake. The
Killer's hand enters the scene once again to touch Kim's shoulder. When
he touches it this time, she awakens for the last time to find it is
Jennifer's hand on her shoulder trying to wake her up.
Kim finally realizes she has been dreaming and tells Jennifer and Scott
what an awful dream she just had. She explains that she must have
fallen asleep right after she got off the phone with them. So, they
decide to leave, and Kim closes the video store. She is relieved that
what she just went through was only a dream. As they leave the store
and head for their cars, though, the Killer enters the scene just as he
did in Kim's dream. The nightmare has just begun!!
