The Construction of an

Electric Racing Cart

The racing go kart is powered by a 72V motor with 48V Alltrax controller.  The electricity comes from four 12V utility batteries.  We will soon begin diagnostic testing on the power and energy outputs in comparison to a common 5hp Briggs engine.  We will utilize both dynamometer readings and track times to construct a useful analysis on engine performance.  In the near future we will incorporate a methanol engine in the comparison to determine the benefits of alcohol for combustion.

Outreach

event

We were lucky enough to have Making Magic Alliance allow us floor space in Dorton Arena to showcase our electric cart at the Motorsports Expo to help raise money for Wake County Summer Programs.  Our booth was joined by Ray Price Harley Davidson, Richard Childress Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, and many other racing companies and professional drivers.  We attracted a lot of positive attention for Wake County, North Carolina State University, and also our club.

Cart testing

I would like to thank Dale’s Body Shop in Richfield, NC and Robertson Backhoe and Dirt Screening in New London, NC for helping make this project a reality over Christmas Break.
