Intermittent and Perennial Stream Identification For Regulatory Applications: Mountain Ecosystem Types, August 2007
Dr. Jim Gregory leads students up a steep stream bed during a class on stream identification methods in the Blue Ridge Mountains, near the B.H. Corpening Forest Training Facility , NC. Taught by NCSU faculty (Jim Gregory) and NC DWQ staff (John Dorney, Larry Eaton), students from State and Federal Government Agencies and Environmental consulting firms get certified in how to identify the extend of headwater streams and where North Carolina's buffer rules apply.
Intermittent and Perennial Stream Identification For Regulatory Applications: Piedmont and Coastal Plain Ecosystem Types, October 2007.
A Piedmont stream in Umstead Park outside of Raleigh (left), a modified Coastal Plain stream (right) and a mineral flat wetland in the Croatan forest (below left) near New Bern, NC during extreme drought conditions in October, 2007. Stream ID criteria developed by North Carolina's Department of Water Quality (NC DWQ) and NCSU faculty (Jim Gregory) include geomorphical, hydrological and ecological stream features in distinguishing between ephemeral, intermittent and perennial streams.
