   Course Objectives and Syllabus

Spring 2011

Description:  Listening and speaking; development of a balanced foundation in all Spanish language skills. Idiomatic, everyday Spanish and cultural awareness. Class practice, laboratory and written homework. Use of Spanish through past tenses, regular and irregular, and various morphological and syntactical aspects. Emphasis on oral skills and increased cultural awareness. Written work and laboratory practice will be assigned daily.
Objectives: At the conclusion of the course, successful students will be able to do the following in writing and orally with sufficient accuracy to be  understood by a native speaker who is accustomed to dealing with foreigners.

  • Greet people appropriately according to time of day, social situation and the relationship of the parties
  • Say good-bye according to the same

  • Describe people as they presently are with respect to physical characteristics and personality traits
  • Describe objects as they presently are with respect to size and color
  • Compare people and objects
  • Indicate where people and things are located
  • Indicate where and when activities take place

  • Ask and answer questions about feelings
  • Ask and answer questions about wants, needs, preferences and plans
  • Ask and answer questions about common activities in the university
  • Describe what is happening at a particular moment in the present
  • Express whole numbers to 2.000.00 and express addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with those numbers
  • Distinguish the performer of an activity from the recipient
  • Express likes and dislikes
  • Extend invitations; accept and decline invitations
  • Ask informational questions (who, what, where, when, how, why) about an event, a situation or a person
  • Identify family members and explain their relationships
  • Express interest, lack of interest and indifference
  • Express actions that will take place in the near future
  • Refer to objects and people using object pronouns to avoid repeating their names
  • Express to whom and for whom things are done
  • Identify at least 10 Spanish speaking countries and their capitals and locate them on a map
  • Locate Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and on a map; identify their capitals and locate them on a map
  • Identify and describe at least two sites of historic and/or cultural interestin Spain
