Spring 2012 Office Hours: 4:00-5:00 Tuesday and Thursday


1) REQUIRED TEXTS:  PLAZAS, 4th ed.  textbook package.  Students are required to bring the proper materials to each class.  Each student is required to bring the PLAZAS, 4th ed. textbook to each class.

2) ATTENDANCE:  Attendance is mandatory and will be taken at every class meeting.  You are allowed 2 absences, excused or unexcused.  Beyond these, your final average will be reduced by 2 points per each additional absence.  You are expected to be on time for each class and to remain in the class for the entire class period.  Failure to do either will result in the deduction of points from your final average.

***NOTICE: 
Beginning with the 2003 Fall Semester, students enrolled in courses in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will be subject to the following Drop for Non-Attendance Policy. This policy is intended to apply to courses where student demand exceeds enrollment capacity.

    "By the second class/laboratory period or fifth business day of the semester (whichever comes first) students who have not attended class or contacted the instructor regarding his/her absence may be dropped from the class roll. This drop will be initiated by the Assistant Dean of the College upon the request of the instructor. The student may petition for readmission to the class if s/he has been dropped in error, or in the event of students with extenuating circumstances, provided the request is received by the tenth business day of the semester. Students who intend to drop a course continue to have the responsibility to officially drop and are encouraged to do this on a timely basis, following normal university procedures."


3) GRADING: The class will be graded on a 10-point plus/minus grading scale.  Percentages for course work are:
                  30%  Major tests
                  30%  Daily grades: Daily grades include oral and written class work, quizzes, homework, and class participation. Daily participation is expected and  will be evaluated.  You are expected to study and complete assigned activities prior to attending class each day and prepare each activity as directed.  Written assignments from the textbook are to be completed on notebook paper and will be collected.  If you encounter an activity that proves problematic, ask about it at the beginning of the class. Class time will include opportunities for individual, paired, and small group work based on the material prepared before class.  Workbook and lab assignments are due bv 5:00 p.m. on each test date.  No exceptions.  
                  10% Oral communication: Oral communication will be evaluated during through daily classroom activities as well as pre-assigned presentations.
                  30% Common Final Exam

 4)  MAKE-UP WORK: Students are expected to complete all assignments on time, including major tests. NO WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED LATE.  In the event that a student must miss a major test due to an emergency, the test may be made up within one day of the student's return to class and only if the student provides written documentation of a university-approved absence.  Notice of the absence must be given prior to the original test time/date. Acceptance of excuses shall be at the discretion of the instructor in accordance with University policies.  NOTICE: Failure to keep a scheduled appointment to make up a test will result in an automatic "0" for that test.

                                
 5)  ONLINE LANGUAGE LAB AND WORKBOOK:  You are required to complete all assigned Quia workbook and laboratory exercises online.  Information pertaining to Quia is included in the PLAZAS textbook package.  Work is to be scheduled on your own time and may be done at home or in the Foreign Language Technology Center in RM 212 Laundry Building (at the corner of Stinson and Current).  ***All specified exercises must be completed by each test date.  Failure to complete workbook and lab assignments will negatively impact your final average in the course. 

 6)  PREREQUISITES:  For FLS 101 or FLS 105, there is no prerequisite.  The course is designed for beginning students or for students placing into FLS 101 or FLS 110.   It is not intended for native speakers of Spanish or for those who have a conversational knowledge of the language. 

     
 7)  ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Students shall abide by the Academic Integrity Policy established by N.C. State University.  Students will be required to sign an honor pledge that will appear on each major test and on the final exam. 

 8)  PLEASE--- NO CHEWING GUM, FOOD, TELEPHONES, OR OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN CLASS!!!!    The use of unauthorized electronic devices during class will adversely affect your grade.
  You are expected to turn off all electronic devices during class.  Special situations will be handled on an individual basis as necessary.
