Prerequisites: MA 341. Credit for this course and MA 401 is not allowed.

Syllabus: Survey of mathematical methods for engineers and scientists. Ordinary differential equations and Green's functions; partial differential equations and separation of variables; special functions, Fourier series. Applications to engineering and science. Not for credit by mathematics majors.

Textbook: Advanced Engineering Mathematics, P. V. O'Neil, 5th edition.

Course Material:

  • First-Order ODEs
  • Second-Order ODEs

Homework: Homework will be assigned, but not collected. However, many homework problems, with or without slight modifications, will appear in quizzes and tests (so will the examples that I work on in my lectures). Thus, it is absolutely imperative to work on each of the assigned problems.

  • Homework Assignments

Tentative schedule of tests: There will be ten quizzes, two tests during the semester and a comprehensive final exam.

    Final Exam: June 29, 8:00AM-11:00AM .

Missed tests/quizzes: There will be no makeup quizzes/tests/exams.
In computing your quiz average I will drop the lowest 3 grades.
If you miss a test/final exam without a valid excuse, a zero will be averaged into your grade.
If you are forced to miss a test/final exam, an excuse from a doctor or other appropriate authorities must be presented.
If the excuse is accepted, your other course work will be adjusted so that you will not be penalized.

    Grading: Class tests - 40%, final examination - 40%, quizzes - 20%.
