Recurving Tropical Cyclones and Mid-latitude Wave Packets
- As tropical cyclones move poleward, they interact with the flow in the subtropics and midlatitudes. Often this results in recurvature which refers to the change from predominantly westward to eastward directed track.
- Recurvature does not merely represent a change in direction of motion. The divergent outflow from the storm perturbs the surounding flow and this may lead to rapid development of high amplitude waves downstream of the tropical storm. In this study, we are interested in the properties of these downstream waves and how they relate to forecast errors.
