Newfoundland dogs are known for their instincts at water
rescue. Consie and I swim with our dogs in summer. When I was doing my PhD
research, Kaloosit and I would take a break on a hot summer's day and skinny
dip in the clear, cold lakes of the UP. I would tread water on my back with my
toes sticking out of the water and Kaloosit would swim around me. Our dogs can
swim long distances or play fetch all afternoon. Yet, when they know it is time
not to swim (before breakfast on a canoe camping trip) they know it is time not
to swim.
