Hands-on Workshop for Pulp and Paper Basics, NCSU Raleigh NC

Offerings in 2012: March 5-9, June 4-8, October 1-5
This hands-on workshop will provide a broad overview of Pulping, Bleaching, Chemical Recovery, Recycling, Papermaking and Converting. The 5-day course will consist of presentations in the morning and hands-on laboratory and pilot-plant exercises in the afternoon. Students receive a course notebook and CD with approximately 400 pages of reference materials. Workshop material discussed in the morning will be re-emphasized in lab and pilot plant exercises covering pulping, bleaching, papermaking, deinking, and refining for increased understanding and retention. One afternoon includes pilot plant paper machine activities. Students get an opportunity to interface with instructors and other students at a course banquet and a social event. This introduction level workshop is appropriate for technical and non-technical individuals with a desire for a laboratory focused course to understand and appreciate the basics of pulping, bleaching, recovery, recycling, papermaking and converting operations. Students receive a certificate with CEU credits and a short course polo shirt. For those interested in more in-depth instruction in a specific area, individualized instruction can be arranged.
The course registration fee is $1800. There are no refunds for the course. Substitutes can be sent to the course or a future credit for another course can be applied within a 12 month period. The course is generally fully booked at least three weeks in advance.

In-mill Workshops
The "hands-on course" concept is also offered by NCSU on mill-site. This course will blend presentations along with in-mill activities on mill equipment to provide a very specific, focused learning experience. The course content can be tailor made to suit a mill with respect to content, course time, and cost. Please contact Dr. Venditti for more information, richard_venditti@ncsu.edu.
