      Todd Wade, OL (RT)
    1. Positive Points: "Great size. Big, not fat, with a huge wingspan. Athletic for size. Surprisingly light on his feet. Has some speed and quickness and can bend his knees. Durable. Productive most of the time. Has improved every year."
    2. Negative Points: "Due to height and some lapses about bending his knees, he will let defenders get underneath him at times. Needs to improve his technique. Average feet. Is probably better-suited to stay at right tackle and is a one-position player. Has a hard time blocking the wide rush because of his footwork and technique. Is not a go-for-the-throat killer. Must take medication or else he will have a problem staying focused."
    3. Summary: "Combination of size and potential should make this player a very high draft pick if somebody is looking for a right tackle."
    4. "Ben Kelly, CB
    5. Positive Points: "A very good athlete who appears to have very good quickness, speed and range in most situations. Shows some man-on-man cover skills. At times will cover very well, especially when playing bump-and-run. Will try to tackle and be physical. Generally plays the ball OK and at times will play it very well. A dangerous kickoff and punt returner. Makes big plays (e.g. the Oklahoma game). Has started in a very good conference for the past two years and played almost as much as a starter in '97. Has had some excellent games (such as the Oklahoma game) when he shows everything scouts want to see except for great height and great playing speed."
    6. Negative Points: "Lacks height and great playing speed in a day when everyone wants bigger cornerbacks. Despite his track background, does not have that great closing quickness and catch-up speed that an Aaron Glenn or Darrell Green had and did not run that well at the Combine. On one key play in the Nebraska game, Kelly could not catch or gain ground on 250-pound Cornhuskers tailback Dan Alexander. Kelly was somewhat inconsistent in coverage and got beaten more than scouts would like to see in '99. (See the San Jose State and Washington games.) Seemed to get a little lax about his techniques at times and may do too much gambling, guessing and anticipating so he can make a big play. Tries to tackle, but because of his size he falls off tackles. May not have always been on the same page with Colorado's coaching staff. Was arrested near presstime after allegedly driving his car the wrong way down a one-way street. There was a warrant out for Kelly's arrest after he failed to appear in court for driving with a suspended license."
    7. Summary: "His return skills will greatly improve his chances of making an impact as a rookie. As a corner, Kelly looks like a big-time cover guy in some games and looks almost marginal in others. Thus, he is very hard to figure out. However, if he works out well, he will probably be a second-round pick."
    8. Deon Dyer, FB
    9. Positive Points: "Excellent size, strength and power. Tough, physical and competitive. Is a good lead blocker on running plays and can pick up the blitz. Strong inside runner. Will try to finish his runs and blocks. Good special-teams player. Plays a lot faster than he times."
    10. Negative Points: "Average running skills. Lacks speed and elusiveness. Does not catch the ball well. Straight-line type who has a hard time adjusting as a blocker."
    11. Summary: "Complementary-type fullback who can fill a role in many offenses and help on special teams."
    12. Deon Dyer (Fullback)

      Arturo Freeman, S
    13. Positive Points: "Before his knee and spleen injuries, Freeman was a solid all-around safety who had range, very good ball skills and hands and the size and toughness to play the run. He showed better cover skills than most safeties and may very well have been the best player on the Gamecocks' defense."
    14. Negative Points: "Looked rusty after coming back from knee and spleen injuries. Seemed very uncomfortable at cornerback. Did not show the movement skills he had before his injury. Did not cover as much ground or play the run as well. Was not physical very often. Took bad angles to the ball too often."
    15. Summary: "Looked much better in '96 and '97 than he did in '99, but after all that happened to him in '98 and '99, it was a miracle that he was even playing."
    16. Earnest Grant, DT
    17. Positive Points: "Has excellent size. Plays somewhat faster than his combine 40 times, which were in the 5.3- to 5.4-second range, would indicate. Will surprise with his quickness at times. Can be physical. Came on as a senior and looked as though he belonged at the Blue-Gray All-Star game. Will show flashes of ability."
    18. Negative Points: "Does not make enough plays. Was not as consistently dominating as a player with his size and ability as he should have been on his level. Is late off the ball too often. Lacks technique and is somewhat crude. Has gained weight and lost speed."
    19. Summary: "Is not a sure thing but could develop into a solid plyer if he will pay the price. Has the raw tools to compete on the next level if he learns to use them more often."
    20. Jeff Harris, CB
    21. Positive Points: "A good athlete with quick feet. Can play bump-and-run coverage. Has above-average playing speed."
    22. Negative Points: "Will struggle at times when playing man-off or zone coverage. Seems to have a hard time finding and playing the ball at times. Is not much of a factor against the run. Tends to hang back and does not want to take on a big back."
    23. Summary: "A good enough athlete to compete for a job if he becomes more consistent against the pass and more aggressive against the run."
    24. Todd Wade (Right Tackle)

"Overview: Without a first-round pick, there wasn't much maneuvering available to coach Dave Wannstedt, so it probably didn't benefit him to have wheeler-dealer Jimmy Johnson in his war room. Give the Dolphins credit, though, for making the best of a bad situation. They got zero starters but at least three players who should help them by adding depth. The first pick, OT Todd Wade (No. 2), was rated a potential first-rounder by some teams. But we felt he was too stiff and, at nearly 6-feet-8, has trouble bending his knees.
      Total choices: 6.
Impact players: Wade (No. 2) might be groomed to eventually replace aging veteran Richmond Webb at left tackle but isn't likely to have much impact as a rookie. CB Ben Kelly (No. 3), on the other hand, should contribute in the return game. He h ad six runbacks on punts or kickoffs for touchdowns at Colorado and has great acceleration. In time, although undersized, he should be able to play as a cornerback, too.
Best value: FB Deon Dyer (No. 4) is a 265-pound lead blocker who was truly the only pure fullback in the draft. The Dolphins lost starter Stanley Pritchett, so Dyer might play quickly.
Reach: Even CB Jeff Harris (No. 7) was surprised when he got the phone call from Miami. The former Georgia cornerback lacks speed, quickness and size and, while he has a nose for the ball, probably could have been signed as a free agent."
    26. Yahoo Sports
    27. Grade: C+
"The Dolphins were drafting from a position of weakness without a first round pick, but they didn't do badly considering. OT Todd Wade represented good value with the second pick. They also should get mileage out of their third round pick, cornerback Ben Kelly, their fourth round pick, fullback Deon Dyer, and their fifth round pick, safety Arturo Freeman. Dyer, in fact, may be the best fullback in the draft."
    28. Sun Sentinel
    29. Grade: C+
"Dolphins addressed a need at offensive tackle with Mississippi's Todd Wade, a big guy who seems to have no problem being physical. The rest of the draft seems solid, but unspectacular. CB Ben Kelly and FB Deon Dyer seem to be solid players, and the same goes for DB Arturo Freeman and DT Earnest Grant. This is truly a wait-and-see collection. "

Fourth-round pick netted Deon Dyer, the draft's top fullback -- a year after high-round pick spent on Rob Konrad. DBs Ben Kelly and Arturo Freeman try to help secondary last seen being shredded by Jaguars. "

    38. Big Dave's Draft Analysis

There's not a lot to get excited about this group of draft picks except for the fact that the Fins picked what they needed most out of this draft. Sometimes if you draft the best player available you'll end up getting a very unbalanced team such as ours. Wannstedt definitely had control of this draft because this is the first time since the Shula days that "need" ruled over "the best pick available."

Wannstedt let everyone know by drafting Todd Wade (RT) and Deon Dyer (FB) that the Fins will run the ball. We've added a couple other offensive linemen in free agency, so, I think we'll have our best chance to run the ball this year. Of course by once again not selecting a quality quarterback we'll have to hope they don't gang up on the line of scrimmage and dare us to pass the ball.

I was disappointed that with all the wide receivers out there this year we didn't draft one. I really feel we should have drafted a speedy wideout to help stretch the defense. Instead we concentrated a little too much on our secondary. If you add Patrick Surtain as our #1 pick, we picked 4 cornerbacks/safeties out of 7 picks. That's a little too unbalanced for me. I guess Wannstedt is saying that our current group of receivers are good enough.

I'm happy with the fact that the Fins didn't draft a problem child this year. The bad press was equally as bad to me as that whipping that Jacksonville gave us in the playoffs. I was going to suggest to Jimmy Johnson that maybe we should once again change the design on our uniforms to have black vertical stripes with a painted on logo that reads, "GOING TO THE BIG HOUSE."

Here's my "rookie" assessment of the rookies:

      * Todd Wade, OL (RT) Sometime this year say good-bye to James Brown, as Todd Wade becomes our new Right Tackle. If there are going to be any inconsistencies, let it be with a rookie rather than a veteran. Todd should help out our running game on the right side and learn some good techniques in pass blocking. This is a safe and long welcome draft pick in favor of the running game. If we're looking for a replacement for Richmond Webb this isn't it. Very good pick.

      * Ben Kelly, CB With the loss of T-Buck in the near future, JJ stressed to Wannstedt to grab this little playmaker. Ben Kelly walks into our nickel coverage and becomes our kick/punt returner. Another good pick even though he is too short to start as a cornerback in my opinion. He's better than John Avery but came as a 3rd round pick rather than a 1st round pick. I think we'll see some good things from him in our nickel package, too. I like this pick.

      * Deon Dyer, FB With the rumors of signing Sam Gash, this is more of a welcome pick for me as we sign the best blocking fullback in the draft. Deon Dyer, like Ben Kelly, were both projected to be signed earlier in the draft and fell into the Fins laps. I would guess this was also a JJ pick. He'll definitely be in the lineup in short yardage situations and will give us a mammoth backfield if Robert Konrad comes in as a RB. Deon Dyer was voted UNC's offensive MVP this season. He gets more pleasure from knocking someone on their can than he does carrying the ball. This is another safe and good pick for the Fins at this point.

      * Arturo Freeman, S If Arturo Freeman can get over his knee and spleen injuries, he will be our "sleeper" pick. Before his injuries and his move to CB, he was considered an up and coming safety. He was also considered USC's best defensive player. We will see if he can even make the roster. We do like fragile safeties, don't we?

      * Earnest Grant, DT The Fins signed another fatboy with their 6th round pick and are hoping he can fill in for the departure of Tim Bowens next year. He's a biggun' with a tremendous amount of strength, but he also isn't your fastest defensive tackle. He may make the team.

      * Jeff Harris, CB We gave up last year's 6th round choice (Brent Bartholomew) for Jeff Harris. He's big, but very inconsistent. So inconsistent that he lost his starting job in college. I don't think he'll make the team, but you just never know.

BIG DAVE'S DRAFT GRADE: There they are, our (but not "the") class of 2000. I'll give the Fins a B- for trying to improve on our weaknesses through the draft. I'm adding Patrick Surtain to the mix since he represents our first round draft pick and will start immediately this year. However, since they threw away a 7th round pick on Jeff Harris, I marked them down to a "minus" on the B.

      Big Dave's Rambling Football Thoughts

One thing I'm concerned about is that we drafted some slow prospects, nothing like the speed demons that JJ drafts. This was a problem in Chicago when Wannstedt was head coach in that he never drafted for speed. One thing to think about is that with a DT or a FB, you don't necessarily need a fast player, but a bull. I hope it all works for the good.

Saturday the Fins were interested in Sam Gash, but on Sunday afternoon after drafting Deon Dyer we weren't. Good, let's just hold onto our money. Deon is the first "Deon" that I've seen in football that runs the 40 in only a 5.00. I'm glad I didn't name my son "Deon" thinking that would make him fast and a first round draft pick. Dang, there goes the beach condo.

Although Patrick Surtain is good, is there anyone out there besides me that isn't overly impressed with him? He seemed to get burned last year as much as T-Buck. He looked excellent in our nickel package, but when he was all by himself on the corner I would hold my breath. I guess we'll see this year what JJ and Wannstedt see in him.

Since our entire defensive line's contracts expire after this year, look for a big year putting pressure on the quarterback and stopping the run. The real motivation this year will be "show me the money!"

I have a correction to make from last week's predraft page: that offensive lineman I thought JJ had gotten last year from the CFL is really Jermaine Haley and he's a DT. I guess Big Dave got a major "brain fart" this time.

The "Lucky Booger" Award goes to the Cincinatti Bungles. Everyone knows that Peter Warrick is going to be a big star in the NFL. In fact he's compared to Jerry Rice in that he is quick and does a whole lot after he catches the ball. If you had a chance to draft "Jerry Rice" and you had the first pick in the draft you'd draft him. He's a real playmaker. You're not sure how those guys picked over him will do, but Peter Warrick is a proven star. It's like making Michael Jordan you're 3rd pick in the draft.

The "Can We Have That Pick Over" Award goes to the Giants as they picked Ron Dayne over the second best running back in the draft, Shaun Alexander. Shaun Alexander will do more with a football than Ron Dayne. At the end of the year you'll be emailing me asking me how I do it :)

Denny Green got his letters mixed up as he drafted DT's with his first two picks instead of DE's. The Viking defense needed defensive ends and cornerbacks. A front office man said, "The Vikings drafted like they were drunk." Denny Green will do a lot of drinking in January as he gets canned at the end of the year. He's making a mess of this team.

It was an interesting draft as Foo Foo, the son of JJ's dog, Buttercup, wasn't drafted at all. He was to be the #1 pick in the entire draft, but broke all 4 legs when he tripped on ESPN's TV camera on the way into the War Room. What a terrible fall to go from the overall consensus #1 pick to Duke hospital's rubber room eating jello. When JJ was questioned about the episode he mumbled something about it being Dan Marino's fault. Go figure. In the meantime I'll keep you posted :)

      • "It looks like that enormous questionnaire the New York Giants use to get a complete psychological profile of each prospect works pretty well.  After all, at this level where everyone is an incredible athlete, perhaps work eth ic, attitude, and character go a long way as to who succeeds and who doesn't make the cut."
      • "The reason the Miami Dolphins rank so low on this list has a lot to do with the draft philosophy of Jimmy Johnson, where he frequently traded down to acquire more draft picks, then turned training camp into a free for all where th e higher drafted players had no more of an advantage than anyone else.  They were bound to get a lot of misses that way.  They also were more likely to cut a player that other team's saw as having potential as 13 of their 51 drafted players have hooked on with other teams."
      • "The Baltimore Ravens have chosen quality over quantity with the fewest number of draft picks in the league, but the highest percentage of drafted players still with the team, 69.2%.  Of their 26 picks, they found 10 starters (38.5%) and 4 Pro Bowlers (15.4%).  Both percentages also lead the league."

"So let's dive a little deeper into the analysis.  In this era of free agency in the NFL, teams must get instant production out of their first round draft picks, along with starting players within a year of the players taken in the 2nd and 3 rd rounds.  So I re-do the chart but with just those players drafted in the top 3 rounds, this time sorted by the % of starters found.

      • "There's a very good reason why the New York Jets are last by a mile.  Their team was built almost exclusively through the acquisition of veteran players to make a short-term run at the Super Bowl.  With this year's draft and four first-round draft picks, obviously that strategy has now reversed itself."
      • "Getting less than 5 starters from the draft just shows very poor drafting by the Falcons, 49ers, Panthers, and Chargers.  Gee, no wonder the NFC West is such a disaster.  Also, the Chargers being included shows that Ryan Leaf wasn't GM Bobby Beathard's only disaster."
      • "The Dallas Cowboys having eight high draft picks no longer even in the NFL is simply atrocious.  The second highest is the Titans with six, and they at least had the second highest number of top 3 dr aft picks to take more chances."
      • "Of the 16 Minnesota Vikings draft picks from the top three rounds, 5 of them are now on other teams, most in the NFL."
      • "The Tampa Bay Buccaneers under GM Rich McKay are cleaning up at the top of the draft.  Of 18 high draft picks, 16 are still with the team, 11 of them start, with 4 of them having gone to the Pro Bowl.  All of those bolded numbers lead the league in this time frame."

"Ok, so which team is best at finding the diamonds in the rough on day two of the draft?"

      22

      • "Baltimore and Washington continue to show at the top of the charts.  Charlie Casserly should get more credit for building that Redskins team.  Looks like Hall of Fame tight end O zzie Newsome has been working wonders with the Ravens, or was it the fact that draft picks had to start as they didn't have the cash to sign any veterans to free agent contracts?  Maybe a little of both."
      • "The Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts keeping just 5 low round draft picks is attributable to Mike Holmgren and Bill Polian completely reworking their rosters after the y were hired."
      • "The Atlanta Falcons were terrible on the last chart, and rank 2nd on this one."
      • "Buffalo and Pittsburgh both depend greatly on the draft as they have a hard time gaining free agents (and do a fantastic job of drafting year after year.)  The Tennessee Titans also had to ke ep 16 low round picks on their roster because no free agents wanted to sign with them during their vagabond years.  What a testimony to the ability to build a team that wound up in the Super Bowl the year they get a home."
