Florence, Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has ranked high among Europe's greatest centers of learning for seven hundred years. Mark Twain called it "a city of dreams." Others know it as the "Birthplace of the Renaissance." Despite its antiquity - it was founded by Julius Caeser in 59 BCE - and remarkable past as home to writers, scientists and artists including Dante, da Vinci, Galileo, Machiavelli, and Michelangelo, Florence has always been dynamic and progressive. Mary McCarthy observed that Florence "is not a shrine of the past...it is a working city." Florence is as magnificent as it is vital. Elizabeth Barnett Browning wrote, "Florence is beautiful...most beautiful. The river rushes through the midst of its palaces like a crystal arrow." In Florence, world-class museums including Bargello and the Uffizi, world-famous churches including the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, world-famous gardens such as the Boboli, and lively markets such as San Lorenzo are all within easy-walking distance on an afternoon stroll. This exciting program offers North Carolina students a unique opportunity to learn about -- and to be a part of -- "Contemporary Italian Society."
