  1. Green vectors show the Earth's magnetic field.

  2. Deflection of compasses above and below wire.

  3. Current now runs through wire; magnetic field due to current curls around wire.

  4. Compass needles now point in direction of net magnetic field (superposition of Earth's field and field due to current in wire).
