The Fantastic 50
This is the place for North Carolina high school football rankings that compare the state's 370+ NCHSAA and NCISAA eleven-man teams, regardless of classification. Computer ratings, like those used in college football, produce a ranking of the top fifty prep football teams in the state, plus a variety of other rankings and predictions. The Fantastic 50 is carried weekly on the commercial websites NCPreps.com and FNFRDU.net.
(June 20, 2008) Having recently finished my Ph.D. at N.C. State, my family and I will soon be moving to Ohio, where I've accepted a math professor position at the College of Wooster, a selective small college (which has similarities to Wofford, Elon, Davidson, Furman, Wake Forest, and Meredith). However, I do plan to continue the Fantastic 50 rankings; to what extent I can do this depends on whether I can get some students involved in helping me. I have recently registered a website (still under construction) for the rankings, www.fantastic50.net. Thank you to all of the coaches, players, and fans who have corresponded with me over the last few years. I hope to still have some role in NC high school football, even from afar.
(Dec. 15, 2007) With
New Bern's upset of seven-time defending state champion Independence,
there are some new teams at the top of this year's final rankings.
Charlotte Latin becomes the first-ever NCISAA school to finish #1
in the Fantastic 50. Latin is followed by three other undefeated
state champions: Western Alamance (3A), Hoggard (4A), and Reidsville
(2AA). Congratulations to all of the state champions!
