Curriculum Vitae

Until I saw the sea
I did not know
that wind
could wrinkle water so

I never knew
that sun
could splinter a whole sea of blue

nor
did I know before,
a sea breathes in and out
upon a shore

Until I Saw the Sea,
by Lilian Moore

Mission Statement

My primary goal is the preservation of our estuaries and coastal waters through a combination of research and education. The health of these systems is strongly affected by transport of water, salt, nutrients, and planktonic larvae. I have conducted physical oceanographic research in the areas listed below, using a wide variety of observational and theoretical methods. My career is moving more into interdisciplinary research with marine biologists and ecologists, and I've been called an honorary biologist. Education and outreach are also very important to me, because environmental preservation can only be achieved by informed and involved citizens.

Pamlico Sound: Larval Transport

and the waters above it, He left to the devil"

Phillip Vella, after 68 years fishing on the CA coast.
